History & Origin of Kumbh Mela

The literal meaning of the term ‘Kumbh’ is ‘pot’. The Kumbh Mela has ancient roots in Hindu mythology, believed to have originated from the tale of the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean). Hindu scriptures like Puranas refer to the pot of immortality (Amrita Patra) that emerged during Samudra Manthan in the hands of Dhanvantri (the first doctor in the world).

According to legend, a pot of Amrit (nectar) fell at four locations during the struggle between gods and demons. These locations were Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik, which became sacred sites for pilgrimage. Since then Kumbh Mela has been observed to celebrate spiritual salvation.
